Tibet- 5oth anniversary of the uprising
Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, marked the 50th anniversary
of Tibetans' failed uprising against China that left thousands dead
and led the Dalai Lama and some 80,000 followers to flee to India. At
left, the Dalai Lama greeted followers near Dharamsala, India, the
seat of the Tibetan government in exile.
In an unusually harsh statement, the 73-year-old leader said that the
Chinese Communist Party had transformed Tibet into a "hell on earth."
While pledging to pursue a non-violent path toward Tibetan autonomy,
the Dalai Lama added, "Today, the religion, culture, language and
identity, which successive generations of Tibetans have considered
more precious than their lives, are nearing extinction." See the full gallery on posterous
