Monlam-The Great Prayer Festival
Taking place on the 4th-11th day of the first Tibetan Lunar month,
Monlam, the Great Prayer Festival, is one of the most important
festivals in Tibetan Buddhism.
The Monlam festival was established in 1409 by Tsong Khapa, founder of
the Geluk (Yellow Hat ) tradition and is considered the greatest
religious festival in Tibetan Buddhism, with performances of masked
dancers, known as Cham, always attracting large crowds.
It is said to commemorate the Buddha's spiritual victory over the
forces of ignorance, anger and greed, and his attainment of
enlightenment. See the full gallery on posterous
